Someone else who has farmed here. Given the multiple environmental crises hitting the planet, and the dire need to remake agriculture in a way that isn't making things worse (which it's currently doing), the entire endeavor needs to entirely separated from the need to make money. Anyone who is interested in farming should be supported by the state, which should also be trying to recruit as many people as possible. We can no longer afford the damages of the industrial-scaled, chemical-dependent, aquifer-depleting, topsoil-destroying, habitat-killing enterprise as it is now.
